Call For Animations – Detroit Intl Festival of Animation 8

On April 1st 2023 at Detroit’s historic Senate Theater, the 8th annual Detroit International Festival of Animation (DIFA) will celebrate and showcase a wild diversity of animations from animators and filmmakers local and international. DIFA will feature approximately 90 minutes of experimental and pop cult shorts as well as more sophisticated and artistic mini features.

Submission are now being accepted. There are no restrictions on content, style, medium or context, but your entry should be animated, either traditionally or digitally, in some way.

Festival of Darkness

On Saturday October 1st 2022, the 1st annual Detroit International FESTIVAL OF DARKNESS will showcase the freshest of independent dark, horror, scifi and fantasy short films from local and international filmmakers. The festival will feature approximately 90 minutes of shorts ranging from experimental student projects to more sophisticated mini features.

The Festival of Darkness will be hosted at THE NARTHEX, a reanimated historic 1900’s church located within the East Canfield neighborhood of Detroit. Seating will include pew benches and individual seats for up to 250 patrons. A cash-only concession stand will be present and staffed parking is available for $5.

Advance tickets and schedule will be released by September 1st.

GIVING BACK – Half of the admission sales will benefit New Path Villages, a Detroit-based 501(c)3 non-profit organization creating self-managed communities of cost-effective tiny homes for people in need of housing. Housing is a basic human need that everyone deserves and New Path Villages seeks to bridge the often insurmountable gap between the street and conventional housing with an inclusive tiny home emergency shelter option.

7th annual Detroit International Festival of Animation (DIFA 7)

On Saturday May 7th 2022 at Detroit’s historic Senate Theater, the 7th annual Detroit International Festival of Animation (DIFA) will celebrate and showcase a great diversity of animations from local and international animators and filmmakers. DIFA will feature approximately 90 minutes of animated shorts ranging from experimental to quirky as well as more sophisticated mini features.

NEW FOR 2022 – DIFA is now hosted at the historic Senate Theater in Detroit! This revitalized 1920’s Art Deco theater is home to the world’s 8th largest Wurlitzer pipe organ and features 784 seats, a classic concession stand, comfy lounge areas and secure parking.

Admission is only $10 and doors open at 7pm with showtime at 8pm. Arrive early by 7:30pm to see the Wurlitzer Pipe Organ preshow presented by the Detroit Theater Organ Society!

NOTE: This event is recommended for 18+ due to some mature content and themes.

On April 2nd and 3rd 2021, the 6th annual Detroit International Festival of Animation (DIFA) will celebrate and showcase a great diversity of animations from local and international animators and filmmakers. DIFA will feature approximately 90 minutes of animated shorts ranging from experimental to quirky as well as more sophisticated mini features.

NOTICE – In 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic, we had high hopes that in 2021 we could all gather once again to watch some great animations. Unfortunately, it is still much too soon to do so safely. So again like last year, we will be streaming the 2021 DIFA festival for FREE ONLINE VIEWING on our original dates April 2nd & 3rd. The stream will begin on the DIFA website at 12am Friday morning and will be available online until 11:59pm Saturday night to watch whenever your popcorn is ready. There will also be a special Facebook watch party on Saturday evening.

Small Wonders 8 – A Virtual Exhibition of Tiny Art & Films

On Saturday July 11 2020 comes a grand virtual event of tiny proportions called β€œSmall Wonders – An Exhibition of Tiny Art & Tiny Filmsβ€œ.

During these difficult and most stressful times, this year’s event will be available for FREE ONLINE VIEWING for everyone to enjoy while safely isolating at home.

THE TINY ART will feature 38 works created from toilet paper, cardboard tubes and masks by local and international artists. The exhibition will be a virtual walk-through gallery starting at 12 noon Saturday July 11th and will be up until the rest of the month.

THE TINY FILMS will feature 18 short films, many created during social isolation, from local and international filmmakers. The films will begin on the Small Wonders website at 7pm Saturday July 11th and will be available online until 11pm Sunday July 12th.

It is our hope that we can bring a little bit of entertainment during this time of need and we hope you are looking forward to this as much as we all are. Until then be safe and take care of your selves, families and friends.

On Saturday April 18 2020 during the annual citywide Dearborn Gallery Rally comes the SPRINGTIME ARTIST MARKET! Hosted inside the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center, this event will feature 50+ local artists, crafters and creatives selling original art, handicrafts and merchandise.

FREE ADMISSION and ALL AGES are welcome!

This indoor event is open from 12 noon until 6pm with plenty of free parking.

HALLOWEEN IS COMING BACK TO DETROIT!!! On Friday April 24th 2020 at Detroit’s Tangent Gallery comes the return of:

HALFWAY2HALLOWEEN MONSTER BOOLESQUE SPOOKTACULAR 5

The tricks and treats include:

– A Halloween burlesque variety show starring Lushes Lamoan, Satori Circus and very special guests to be announced soon

– Costume contests with cash-like prizes (seriously, show us your fabulous worst!)

– A film festival of local and international indy short horror films

– A room full of creepy merchants selling strange & odd merchandise

– Also Halloween lounge music, UV animated decor, booze specials, cheap candy and haunted hijinks galore!

Admission is $15 with costume and $20 without (seriously, just put something on). Admission includes the merchants, film fest, variety show, contests, etc. This event is 18+.

Call for Tiny Art & Films – Small Wonders 8

(NOTE: This date is the deadline for the art call…the actual event is July 11th )

On Saturday July 11th 2020 at The Heidelberg Project HQ and Guesthouse in Detroit, we will be hosting our 8th annual exhibition of tiny art & films called β€œSmall Wondersβ€œ. This exhibition will showcase numerous fine art pieces 5 inches and under from artists local and worldwide. We are also excited to once again include a showcase of tiny films 5 minutes and under to the exhibition!

The call for art is now open for all mediums and themes, however there is one guideline:

– All art must be no larger than 5 inches in any dimensions (including frames if applicable)

There are no fees to submit, but all accepted artists will be required to pay a single $10 registration fee, regardless of the number of pieces selected.
